Bloomfield Public Library announces its schedule for its Monday Afternoon at the Movies program: June 13 – “That Darn Cat!” (Hayley Mills) (G), June 20 – “Hannah and Her Sisters” (Mia Farrow) (PG-13) and June 27 – “Goodfellas” (Ray Liotta) (R). All films start at 12:15 p.m. Admission is free.
Harrison
Harrison Recreation Pop Warner football registrations opened on June 6 and will be held until July 1 at the Community Center, 401 Warren St., from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Registration is open for the following age groups: Pee Wees: Ages 7 to 9, not turning 10 after Sept. 1; Juniors: Age10 and 11, not turning 12 after May 1; Seniors: Ages 12 and 13, not turning 14 after May 1. Kearny
The 1050 Women’s Club of the Kearny Elks Lodge, 601 Elm St., will meet at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8. The group will have its June party.
The Presbyterian Boys-Girls Club, 663 Kearny Ave., will have its annual beach party on Friday, June 10, from 7 to 10 p.m. D.J. Shawn will be the star disc jockey, spinning the latest club tunes and special requests. Prizes will be given to the best dancers and the best beachwear. Guests are restricted to grades 6 to 9. The dance will be supervised by Kearny teachers and members of the club’s Board of Directors.
Lyndhurst
The Lyndhurst Elks & Emblem Club open house/flea market will be held Sunday, June 12, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 251 Park Ave. Anyone in the community who may be interested in learning more about the charities the Elks support is welcome to attend. Lyndhurst Health Department will have a free meditation for health workshop on Wednesday, June 15, at 11 a.m. Certified meditation trainer and Lyndhurst resident Parbatie Singh will lead this workshop to instruct participants on meditation techniques to relieve stress and anxiety. Due to the overwhelming response to Mary Lou Mullins’ monthly bus trip to Atlantic City, a 55-passenger bus will be booked for the last Sunday of June, July and August. Cost is $25 with a cash return of $22. The bus will leave St. Michael’s Church parking lot, Lyndhurst, at 10:30 a.m. Please make reservations early. Seats are limited. Last call for reunion of anyone who attended the Riverside Schoolhouse (now called the Little Red Schoolhouse)! The reunion will be held Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the schoolhouse, located at the corner of Riverside Ave. and Fern Ave. in Lyndhurst, across the street from the county park. North Arlington
The following monthly meetings of the North Arlington Board of Health have been cancelled: Wednesday, July 6, and Wednesday, Aug. 3. Regularly scheduled meetings will resume again in September.
The North Arlington Board of Health, in conjunction with Clara Maass Medical Center, an affiliate of the St. Barnabas Health Care System, will sponsor a free prostate cancer screening for men 40 years of age and older on Thursday, June 16, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Charles A. Kientz Jr. Community Health Center, 10 Beaver Ave. Included in the program will be a PSA blood test and examination by attending urologist, Dr. Sal Lombardo. North Arlington Public Library announces an interactive showcase called “Traditions of India,” a dance performance promoting the ancient dance form of Barata Natyam, on Thursday, June 24, at 1 p.m. in the library. This event is the kick-off to the library’s summer reading program, “One World, Many Stories.” On-line registration for the reading program will be available from June 25- July 1 on a first-come first-serve basis at the North Arlington library or from home by visiting northarlington.bccls.org/children.html and follow the links.
The library will offer the following weekly classes from on July 5 to Aug. 11: Ages 2-3: Singing and dancing on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. and story time on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.; ages 4-5: Story time on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and arts and crafts on Thursdays at 11 a.m.; ages 6-10: World Wide Web on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and arts and crafts on Thursdays at 6 p.m.; ages 10 and up: Young adult book club on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and arts and crafts on Thursdays at 4 p.m.; drop-in programs for all ages: Board games on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and family morning movie on Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
Special events will be held weekly at the library on Wednesdays, starting June 29 through Aug. 17. Separate registration is required for each program. Registration will open online one week before the event at northarlingtonlibrary.bccls.org.
The library is offering two adult programs in coordination with the summer reading club theme “One World, Many Stories”: McDermott’s Irish folk music on Tuesday, July 19, at 7 p.m. and Judith Krall-Russo’s: Teas from Around the World on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m.
Children of all ages are encouraged to participate in the library’s summer reading program. For every book up to 10 books, incentives will be rewarded. The program will conclude with a closing ceremony event on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. where children who completed the reading portion of the summer reading club will receive special recognition.
