LYNDHURST – Area seniors will have the opportunity this summer to take in tango virtuosos, enjoy an acclaimed one-woman show, learn to garden organically and feast on tasty Italian cuisine as part of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s (NJMC) popular Summer Senior Programs. All events take place at the NJMC’s Meadowlands Environment Center in DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst.
On Thursday, June 9, at 7 p.m., the Cynthia Sayer Trio will present “The Banjo and All That Jazz,” an eclectic program featuring elements of swing, tango, western and classical music. Sayer, a member of Woody Allen’s jazz band, is regarded as one of the country’s top banjo players.
Additional season highlights include a “Fashion Recycled” event on Tuesday, June 14, at 2 p.m., in which participants will create art made from found objects and a discussion of New Jersey’s nautical history, including a display of salvaged artifacts, on Thursday, June 23, at 7 p.m.
Master gardener Wanda Knapsik will teach participants how to plant organic gardens on Tuesday, June 28, at 2 p.m. On Thursday, July 14, at 7 p.m., an ensemble of Argentine dancers and musicians will heat up the night with sultry Latin style and fashion. Bring your dancing shoes: the event will feature a tango lesson.
The season concludes on Thursday, July 28, at 7 p.m. with an Italian Music and Food Festival featuring “Sinatra Idol” winner Eric DeLaura and an assortment of popular Italian entrees and delectable desserts.
