Harrison
Harrison/East Newark Elks will have their annual Flag Day ceremony on Sunday, June 26, at 1 p.m. at the Harrison Library Park. All are invited to learn the history of the American flag and also to honor men and women serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Kearny

The Kearny Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission-River Restoration Division, is seeking participants for the third annual Town of Kearny canoe race, scheduled for Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Norman A. Doyle pavilion, next to the Kearny crew house. This event is open to Kearny residents only. Race participants must be no younger than age 12 and accompanied by an adult. Some canoe experience is preferred but not required. The cost to enter is $10 per person with a two-person canoe team necessary. The Essex County Environmental Commission will provide approximately 12 canoes. Participants are encouraged to provide their own canoes. The Presbyterian Boys-Girls Club, 663 Kearny Ave., will be open during July and August on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Most members and guests are between the ages of 8 and 15.
The summer program offers basketball, dodgeball, wiffleball, kickball, gymnastics, bowling, bumper pool, air hockey, foozball, arts and crafts, ping pong and electronic games.
Summer trips have been scheduled to the State Fair, Newark Bears, Red Bulls, Mountain Creek Water Park, Quebec vs. N.J. Jackals and pro wrestling. All trips are chaperoned by Kearny teachers.
The club will be supervised this summer by a professional staff, including Tom Fraser, Lincoln School guidance counselor, and members of the Board of Directors.
Lyndhurst
A free senior citizens program, “Diving into New Jersey’s Nautical History,” will be presented at the Meadowlands Environment Center, DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst, on Thursday, June 23, at 7 p.m. Chet Nesley, a professional diving instructor, will discuss the history of shipwrecks off the Jersey Shore, presented with maps and underwater photos. Recovered artifacts will be on display.
On Tuesday, June 28, at 2 p.m., seniors are invited to a talk on organic vegetable gardening. Master gardener Wanda Knapsik will teach you about heirloom tomatoes and herbs, and how to plant for diversity in vegetables, herbs, and flowers to attract beneficial insects.

A veterans’ ward party will be held on Tuesday June 28, at Chestnut Hill Extended Care facility, Passaic, starting at 2:30 p.m. The party is being held in memory of the late James Cantore, sponsored by his widow Frances Cantore and his daughter Vera Troncone. American Legion Post 139, Lyndhurst, will conduct games of chance and distribute treats to the veterans, including those who are bedridden. North Arlington
Special Angels and Lyndhurst Flag Football have gotten together and created a flag football program with a special twist, a football mentoring program for special needs children. Nutley
An Adult Summer Reading Club at the Nutley Public Library kicks off June 27. Each book that you read or listen to gives you an opportunity to win fun prizes in weekly drawings. Readers are encouraged to include a review of their book on each raffle ticket or post a review on the Facebook page for the library. Hooked on Books, a book club for fifth and sixth graders, will meet at the library on Tuesday, July 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. At each meeting, the group will discuss a book, have a snack and play a game.
