Always be aware of your surroundings—and of anyone who might be in those surroundings—even in a quiet town like Kearny. And even in daylight.
At 5 p.m. on July 19, Kearny detectives responded to a report of a suspicious-acting individual on Schuyler Ave. near Stewart Ave. There, they saw a shirtless man peering into parked cars. They also saw a woman walking alone on Schuyler.
As the detectives watched, Chief John Dowie reported, the man sat down on some steps, waited for the woman to pass, and then began following her. She approached the front door of an apartment, and as she unlocked it, the man pushed his way into the vestibule.
As one of the officers ran to the building, the man emerged almost immediately and headed north on Stewart. The detective found that woman had not been robbed but “was very scared,“ Dowie said.
The suspect, a 24-year-old Jersey City resident, was caught a short distance away and arrested on a charge of burglary and was also found to be wanted on a $600 Jersey City warrant, police said.
He was remanded to the Hudson County Jail.
