Evelyn Demetroules
Evelyn Demetroules died Aug. 22 at her home. She was 80. Born in West New York, she lived in North Arlington before moving to Rutherford in 1981.

After her father died, Evelyn, along with her mother, helped run the family Regency Dry Cleaning Business in North Arlington while attending Middle School. After graduating she became secretary to the President of Wallace and Tiernan in Belleville. She eventually left the work force to raise her family. Some years later she joined MD and Son Construction, a company founded by her husband Michael, as secretary for over 35 years. Evelyn and Michael owned Thoroughbred Champion Horses and were recipients of The N.J. Breeders Cup Award.
She is survived by her husband Michael and her children and their spouses Emmanuel and Claire Demetroules, Maria and Sam Karadimos and Elaine and Nick Economou. Also surviving are her grandchildren Jessica, Nicole, Katerina, Evan, Maria, Michael, Veronica and Kevin.

James Durning
James Durning died on Aug. 21 in Select Specialty Hospital in Rochelle Park. He was 83. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he has lived in Kearny for the past 52 years.

Jim served in the Royal Airforce and is a retired carpenter from Essex County Carpenters Local 1342. He is a Gold Card Member of the Irish American and Scottish American Clubs where he was active with the Golf and Shuffle Board teams. He was also a Celtic supporter.
Husband of the late Lily (nee McKinnon) he is survived by his children and their spouses Diane and Mike Gray, Elaine and John Fleck, Anne Marie and Jerry Coppola and Jim and Nancy Durning, his sisters Peggy Alessi and Katie Duffy and his grandchildren Andrew, Lindsay, Matthew, Carly, Haley, Adam, Julia and Lily; also surviving is his dear friend Betty.

John Lawrence Goechius
Entrepreneur, lived in Harrison, 82
John (Jack) Lawrence Goetchius, Sr. passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 22. Jack was 82.
Jack was born and raised in Harrison, New Jersey and lived in Florham Park before moving back to Harrison 10 years ago where he ran Nat Anders Upholstery Supply.
Jack enjoyed traveling and always encouraged his family to see the world. He was a driven entrepreneur, a Korean War veteran, and a well-respected Newark city firefighter.
Jack is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Henrietta Goetchius, his siblings Jeane, Della, Myra, Arthur, and his beloved wife Dorothy. Jack is survived by his sister Peggy, his five children, nine grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Jack could always keep you busy with a story and knew how to keep a smile on your face. The many business ventures he experienced made him the knowledgeable and influential man we all knew and loved him to be. The world lost a great man in Jack Goetchius, but none will forget the impact he had on so many lives.

Filimina Janoski
Mrs. Filimina Janoski of Kearny died in the home of her grandson, Paul on Friday in Lititz, PA. She was 94.
She was born in East Newark and lived in Kearny for most of her life. She moved to Lititz during the final year of her life.
Arrangements were by the Condon Funeral Home, 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Filimina was married to Walter Janoski who died in 1994. Her son Walter Janoski died in 2007. She was a seamstress in her youth,then later became a homemaker after she married.
Surviving are three grandchildren Paul J. Janoski, Vincent J. Janoski and Mary Racioppi. And her great-grandchildren: Sebastian, Siera, Emily and Vincent Janoski, Sarah and Ryan Racioppi and Samantha Ayala.
Hayden J. Dorsett
A five-month-old North Arlington baby’s courageous fight for survival against heavy odds ended Thursday, Aug. 16.
Hayden Jeter Dorsett, son of Ady and Rob Dorsett, and brother of Jackson, succumbed to Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a condition he was diagnosed at 20 weeks gestation, according to a website, “Hayden’s Heart,” created by his mother.
Hayden was also diagnosed with a coarctation of the aortic arch, the website said.
Within the first week of his birth, Hayden underwent open heart surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Two additional heart operations followed, keeping him in and out of hospitals for much of his short life.
Doctors advised his family that the child’s condition “occurs in one out of every 10,000 births …. In Hayden’s case, the doctors have simply explained it as ‘bad luck.’’’
A family friend, Marcello Barria, owner of Mykonos Restaurant, of North Arlington, came to know the Dorsetts because they brought 3-year-old Jackson to the YMCA child care center on Ridge Road, near his eatery.
Barria said that Ady and Rob were both public school teachers in Union City.
By sharing the story and images of Hayden on the internet, “it touched so many people – probably thousands,” Barria added, judging from the responses posted on the website and a blog, Haydensheart.com, also created by Ady.
Hayden’s funeral was held Friday, Aug. 24, at the Parow Funeral Home, North Arlington. Hayden is survived by his parents and brother, in addition to grandparents Bob and Pam Smith of Williamsport, Pa., and Bob and Donna Dorsett of Ridgefield; great grandmother Jean DeNicola; aunts Tatum, Kristyn and Katie, uncles Craig, Ryan and Andy; and cousins Alex, Gabe, Preston and Kathrine.
According to the funeral home, the Dorsetts will welcome donations to help several heart foundations and organizations which have generously supported the family during their ordeal.
