At 7:30 p.m. a New Street resident returning home for the day reported the theft of jewelry from a bedroom dresser. Police are investigating.
A Beech Street resident was scammed by a phony lottery schemer, police said. Police said the resident was contacted by a woman claiming to be a lottery agent who asked the resident to send $250 to cover taxes to a specific location to qualify for a $100,000 cash prize. After the resident sent the money, the “agent” has made harassing calls demanding more money and police have warned against doing so.

Someone scrawled graffiti on a building next to Municipal Lot 1 on William Street, police said. The incident was logged at 6:17 p.m.
•At 4:44 p.m. a Crestwood Ave. resident reported that a thin white man in his late teens with dark hair, about 5-feet-eight, walked into the driveway, removed a backpack blower and brush cutter from the resident’s vehicle and drove away in a red older model Ford Explorer or Chevrolet S10. Detectives are investigating.

A Vine Street resident was driving on Bloomfield Avenue at 7:56 p.m. when someone threw eggs at the resident’s car, damaging its side panel, front hood and windshield, police said. Sept. 22 A burglar broke into a vehicle parked on Evergreen Avenue, rummaged through the glove box and consoles and removed an unidentified item, police said.

At 10:03 a.m. police stopped a car driven by Dylan Pereira, 19, of Nutley, on Franklin Avenue after a license plate check disclosed that the driver was wanted on a warrant out of Union. After he paid his bail and was advised to call Union Municipal Court for a new appearance date, Pereira was released.
Police were called to Freeman Place at 5:34 a.m. after someone spotted two men trying to break into a parked vehicle. Police said they found that the vehicle’s driver’s side door handle had been tampered with. They said they were unable to trace the two would-be burglars.
At 3:02 a.m. police stopped a car operated by Melvin Garrido, 23, of Belleville, who, police said, was driving at an excessive speed. Police said Garrido also had outstanding warrants from Nutley and Lyndhurst. Police ticketed Garrido for speeding, expired license and driving while suspended and then released pending new court appearance dates.
A Newark motorist traveling on Centre Street was pulled over at 2:47 a.m. after police said he violated a right on red restriction. Police said Marlon Bayas, 19, also had outstanding warrants out of Newark. He was released after paying the appropriate fees and advised to contact Newark Municipal Court for a new appearance date.
