John E. Egan

John E. Egan died on Dec. 29 in Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville. He was 70.

Born in Newark, John lived for many years in Kearny.

John was a trustee at the Eagles in Kearny, and was a truck driver for Emery Air Freight in Newark.

Son of the late Elsie Haytko, John is survived by his wife, Joan (nee Ciuba), and his daughters, JoAnn Egan, Melanie Macartney, and Andrea Egan. Also surviving are his grandchildren, James, Tiffany, Jonathan, and Devin.

Russell E. Gibson

Russell E. Gibson, 75 died on Dec. 24 in the Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.

Born in Coaldale, Pa., Mr. Gibson lived in Kearny for many years.

He is survived by his companion Patricia Bartone and will be missed by many of his friends at the Kearny senior residence on Schuyler Ave.

Private arrangements were under the direction of the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home.

June Gouveia

June Gouveia (Perry) 71, died on Jan. 5 in the Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.

Relatives and friends were asked to call at the Thiele- Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny on Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. Cremation will be private. Mrs. Gouveia was born in Jersey City and was a lifelong resident of Kearny.

She is survived by her husband Antonio L.; children Joanne M. Gouveia, Anthony M. and John R.; and her grandchildren Michael and Nicole Gouveia.

Mary Ellen Lynch

Mary Ellen (nee Toth) Lynch, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012. She was 85. Born in Newark, she was a lifelong resident of Harrison.

Mary Ellen obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and math from the College of White Plains of Pace University in 1948 and a Master’s Degree in Education from Seton Hall University in 1957. She began her teaching career at the Oak Tree School in Edison, before moving on to the Paramus School District. She was initially appointed to the Harrison School system in 1959-60 teaching at the Lincoln School (1st and 8th grades), Washington School (1st grade) and later Washington Middle School (6th, 7th and 8th grades), retiring in 1992. Her distinguished teaching career culminated when she was awarded the “Teacher of the Year” in 1987 by then Gov. Thomas Kean. She was a life member of the National Education Association.

Mary Ellen has been a member of the Harrison Cancer League for over 40 years, serving as the recording secretary, treasurer, vice president and past president (twice). She was appointed to the Harrison Board of Health, serving as president twice, until resigning in August 2012. She was a former trustee of Holy Cross Church in Harrison, past president of the Holy Cross Parish Council, past president of the Holy Cross Rosary Society and a parish delegate to the Archdiocesan Council. She also was a member of the Holy Cross Choir for 50 years. She was recently honored in May 2012 by Hudson County and the Town of Harrison as a 2012 Senior Citizen of the Year.

Predeceased by her husband, John A. Lynch (1981), she is survived by her children, John P., Regina K. Siple and her husband David, Margaret M. Halasnik and her husband Peter, one granddaughter, Katherine M. Siple and seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Allan.

The funeral was conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, on Monday, Dec. 31. A funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church, Harrison. Her Interment took place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Margaret Munk

Margaret Munk (Greb), 95, died on Friday, Dec. 21, at her daughter’s home in Nanticoke, Pa.

Arrangements were by theThiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A service was held on Saturday Dec. 29. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Cecilia Church, Kearny, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.thielereid.com.

Mrs. Munk was born in Newark and lived in Harrison before moving to Kearny in 1947. She moved to Pennsylvania in 2001.

She was a member of the Rosary Society and the Seniors, both of St. Cecilia Church, as well as a member of Cork & Chester # 67.

Margaret is survived by her children Margaret T. Maisto, Patricia Redline, Arlene Carlin, and John A. Munk; siblings Anna Smykowski, Geroge Greb and Herbert Smith, and six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Adam in 2000.

Andrew R. Saputelli

Andrew R. Saputelli died suddenly on Dec. 31 at home. He was 47. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he moved to Kearny, seven years ago.

Andy was a dispatcher for All State Power and Vac in Rahway. He was an avid Rangers and Gators fan and played ice hockey in a men’s league in Philadelphia.

Husband of Susan (Figueredo), he is the son of Rita and the late Robert Saputelli and brother of Jeffrey (Ann) and Susan Saputelli. He is also survived by his nephew, Dominic and his in-laws, Francisco and Mirta Figueredo.
