Bloomfield Public Library, 90 Broad St., announces a new Financial Book Club for beginners. The first meeting will be on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. Registration is not required and all are welcome to stop by at any point. Each month, the group will read a book, perhaps schedule some miniworkshops to practice lessons learned during the meetings and listen to guest speakers.
For this session, please bring your cell phones, laptops or tablet computers, a calculator, a pen or pencil and a pad, as well as a recent credit card statement (this is for personal use and will not be viewed by the facilitator).
The Book Club’s first reading selection will be “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Clason. This book gives financial advice through fictional stories of merchants from Babylon, suggesting that the sound financial principles which apply to these merchants are just as applicable in modern society. It emphasizes universal principles such as building savings, controlling expenses and working within your competency.

The Bloomfield Public Library Book Club will meet on Monday, Feb. 4, from 6:45 to 7:50 p.m. in the conference room to discuss “Houskeeping” by Marilynne Robinson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning first novel. The book was adapted into a film starring Christine Lahti.
When their grandmother dies, sisters Ruth and Lucille go to live with their Aunt Sylvie. A vague, gentle drifter, Sylvie loves her orphaned nieces, but her idea of “housekeeping” is unlike anyone else’s. Lucille wants to live a normal life, but Ruth sees her aunt as a kindred spirit.

Take a glimpse into the life and times of Albert Einstein with the Meadowlands Environment Center’s Dr. Victoria Madden on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 2 to 3 p.m. This program is for all ages. Learn about the revolutionary physicist’s education, philosophy and family life. Although he is well known for his contributions to science, Einstein also led a fascinating and at times mysterious, personal life. A collection of Einstein memorabilia will be displayed. Admission is $5, MEC members $4.

Sacred Heart Home-School, Lyndhurst, is sponsoring its annual Mega 50/50. Tickets are $50 each for a chance to win $5,000. Lyndhurst High School students will present the musical “The Wedding Singer” Feb. 7 to 9 at 7 p.m. nightly in the school auditorium. “The Wedding Singer” relates the story of Robbie Hart, New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until he’s left at the altar, and then makes every wedding he sings at as disastrous as his own. He meets an engaged waitress, falls in love and well…you’ll have to come to the musical to find out what happens next.
Tickets are $10 each, and can be purchased in advance through the Lyndhurst High School Main Office, or at the door, each night of the show. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
