Literacy Volunteers of America of Essex and Passaic counties, in partnership with the Bloomfield Public Library, is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Kearny
Mayor Alberto Santos invites local residents and business owners to an informational meeting with representatives from FEMA and National Flood Insurance along with Kearny Town Council members, the Town Engineer and the Town Administrator. This meeting is intended to review the new flood maps, flood zone designations and the effect these designations may have on property owners in the flood zones.
The meeting is scheduled for March 7 at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Kearny Town Hall.

Jim Wright, of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, will be the guest speaker at the Lyndhurst Garden Club meeting on Monday, Feb. 25. His latest book, “The Nature of the Meadowlands,” covers the region’s natural and unnatural history. Wright maintains the popular Meadowlands Nature Blog for the NJMC www.meadowblog.net. He is also the birding columnist for The Record, nature columnist for the South Bergenite and the author of three other coffee table books.

The Meadowlands Environment Center, Two DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst, will host “Eggs-ellent!,” part of its Family Science Night series on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. This program is recommended for ages 6 to 12.

A veteran’s ward party will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, starting at 2:30 p.m. at Chestnut Hill Extended Care Facility, Passaic. Games of chance will be played and refreshments will follow and veterans that are bed ridden or can’t attend will have treats distributed to them also. This party is in memory of Sabino Troncone and is sponsored by his son Vincent and his wife Vera Troncone and in memory of James Cantore from his wife Frances Cantore.The rehabilitation committee also visits veterans living in private boarding and nursing homes once a month in Kearny, Newark and Garfield.

Celebrate Women’s History Month with a book talk and signing by Dr. Margaret Brisco at Nutley Public Library, 93 Booth Dr., on Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. “The Way it Was: Memories of a Woman Doctor,” recounts her experiences working as one of the first women to be an intern and a resident at Newark’s Martland Medical Center during the turbulent 60’s. Dr. Brisco also worked as an obstetrician/ gynecologist in Nutley and at Clara Maas Hospital for many years. Her previous works include “Metamorphoses” and “Women in Transition,” both story collections. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

The Nutley Jaycees are seeking nominations for the 42nd annual Distinguished Service Awards program.
Five individuals who live or work in Nutley will be honored for their outstanding contributions to the quality of life in Nutley. The awards are presented for commitment and excellence in the areas of business, education, civic affairs, public health and safety and to one outstanding individual between the ages of 21 and 40. Deadline for nominations is March 11.
