Highlights from the Nutley Police blotter

June 20

A Washington Ave. business owner called police at 1:16 p.m. to report the disppearance of $500 worth of scrap metal from the fenced-in yard on the property. Detectives are investigating.

Patrol units stopped a vehicle that made a wide left hand turn from River Road onto Park Ave., bound for Rt. 21, at 1:55 a.m. after noticing that the vehicle had damage to its front passenger side tire and was driving on the rim. After being administered field sobriety tests, the driver, Jacklyn Sierra, 23, of Maywood, was charged with DWI and was issued three motor vehicle summonses.

June 19

The owner of a vehicle parked on Franklin Ave. called police at 3:08 p.m. to report that while she was doing laundry, someone removed her purse, along with credit cards, license and bank information, from the vehicle. Detectives are pursuing some leads arising from the incident, police said.

June 17

At 1:50 p.m., police were called to a Whitford Ave. residence where the owner told police that upon arriving home, they found the front door forced open and the master bedroom ransacked. Investigating, police said they found the master bedroom drawers had been opened and rummaged through. The owner told police several items, valued at more than $20,000, had been taken. An investigation is proceeding.

At 10:18 a.m., police responded to a Lloyd Court residence on a report of an attempted burglary. The victim told police they found their kitchen window was cracked, the window screen damaged, and the ladder to the fire escape lowered.

June 16

At 9:33 a.m., a Prospect St. resident called police to report that someone had broken into a chicken coop on their property. Police said they noticed that the coop’s front door appeared to have pulled open, causing the lock to break, and that the rear door also appeared to have been ripped open. Nothing was listed as missing, however, police said.

The manager of a Centre St. eatery called police at 12:45 a.m. to report they’d been receiving prank calls for food orders from the same phone number. Police arranged for the phone company to block that number from calling the eatery.

June 15

The owner of a truck parked on Bloomfield Ave. called police at 2:03 p.m. to report that someone had removed a Red Max backpack blower and an Echo line trimmer from the truck’s flatbed. The missing items were valued at about $800, police said.

A Washington Ave. tenant called police at 3:21 p.m. to report a burglary. The tenant told police that after returning home, they discovered that someone had removed a 42-inch flat screen TV, cash an Xbox 360 game system, and other items. Police said it appeared that the thief entered through an open window in the rear of the building. Detectives are investigating.

At 8:46 a.m., police received a report of criminal mischief to a vehicle. The owner told police someone had broken off the driver’s side mirror of their car which had been parked in Municipal Lot 3 during the night.
