It’s all about “Birds and Witches and Bloomfield: On the 200th anniversary of the Death of Alexander Wilson” at the library on Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. Hosted by Bloomfield resident Rick Wright, a widely-published writer and lecturer at birding events, this illustrated seminar will outline the life and work of Alexander Wilson. Arriving from Scotland as a political and economic refugee in 1794, Wilson provided eyewitness tales from early 19th century Bloomfield that offer insights into our area’s history. Wilson wrote about ornithology and taught at several schools, including one in Bloomfield. Wright is book review editor for Birding and the American Birding Association Blog. Harrison
Come read, sing and play with your child at Little Ones Learning at the Harrison Public Library, 415 Harrison Ave. The program is held on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning this month for children up to 36 months. No registration is needed; however, space is limited to the first 15 children.
As part of the National Night Out observance on Tuesday, Aug. 6, members of the Harrison Police Department will be in Roosevelt Park, 318 Harrison Ave., with the Harrison East Newark Elks Club from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be DJ entertainment and inflatables for kids.
Kearny

The Arts and Crafts Club at the Henrietta Benstead Senior Center runs a trip to the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City every third Wednesday. The cost is $30. A bus leaves from the center at 60 Columbia Ave. at 9:30 a.m. Coffee and donuts are provided before the bus leaves, and riders get a goody bag on the way home. The Presbyterian Boys-Girls Club, 663 Kearny Ave., continues to be open in August on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and offers members and guests ages 8 to 15 basketball, dodgeball, wiffleball, kick ball, gymnastics, bowling, bumper pool, air hockey, foozball, arts and crafts, ping pong and electronic games.

Lyndhurst Food Pantry, on the first floor of the Municipal Annex, 253 Stuyvesant Ave., is re-stocking. This pantry, which serves more than 140 Lyndhurst families in need, welcomes donations of canned vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, applesauce, condiments, and paper products. No expired items will be accepted. All donations can be dropped off at the pantry. North Arlington Girl Scout Troop 4451 is looking for donations for a “Sweets for the Troops” cookie drive to send cases of Girl Scout cookies to U.S. troops. So far, more than 20 cases containing 240 boxes have been sent. There are still 40 cases left. North Arlington Girl Scouts is reaching out to the community for donations to help meet their quota. Children in grades 3 to 8 can learn to “Tackle Like a Pro” with Coach Thurmond Moore during a one-day clinic on Aug. 10, from 1:30 to 5 p.m., at Monsignor Owens Field in Nutley (rain or shine).
Moore brings 29 years of experience from the NFL, college and high school programs. He also trains prospects for the NFL draft. The clinic will demonstrate safe and productive tackling techniques and provide valuable resources for coaches on how to teach, diagnose and assess.
