Fatal accident in Walmart lot

KEARNY —

A 35-year-old East Orange man was fatally injured Sunday night when he was struck by a minivan in the Walmart parking lot, Kearny police reported.

Police said the accident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. as Anthony Reed and a companion, Elijah Myers, 30, also of East Orange, were walking to their car.

Both were hit by the van, operated by a 30-year-old Newark man, police said.

The victims were taken to University Hospital in Newark, where Reed died about an hour later. Myers apparently suffered only a broken wrist.

Police said the van driver, whose name was not released, was charged with causing death by auto while driving on the revoked list. The investigation has been turned over to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, and additional charges may be pending.

Further details were not immediately available.
