Archdiocese of Newark’s cemeteries seek food donations
Catholic Cemeteries, a ministry of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, kicks off its 15th annual Christmas Food Drive to assist those in need this season. Non-perishable food items such as cereal boxes or soup cans will be distributed to local food pantries to help feed those who are less fortunate. Donations may be brought to Archdiocesan cemetery and mausoleum offices during business hours from now through Jan. 6. A list of cemetery locations is available at www.rcancem.org. Financial donations also are accepted online at www.rcancem.org/donate.
“Feeding the hungry is one of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy and performing this charitable act of loving kindness on behalf of a deceased loved one is a caring gift that truly honors their memory in a tangible way,” says Andrew P. Schafer, executive director of Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark.
The annual food drive has aided two local organizations in recent years: the Newark-based Missionary Sisters of Charity, founded by Saint Teresa of Calcutta, which provides food and shelter for women in the community; and the Emergency Food and Nutrition Network in East Orange, which provides assistance and emergency food supplies to 50 food centers in the Archdiocese.

Decorating vets’ graves
The Belleville Historical Society seeks volunteers to participate in Wreaths Across America/Wreaths Across Belleville to decorate the graves of local veterans. This year’s event takes place at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Belleville, at noon. Donations of $15 — the cost of each wreath — are being sought. A Community Outreach Navigator for the Urban League of Hudson County will be at the Senior Center Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to provide services in the areas of education, mentorship, economic development, job placement, childcare, healthcare, family counseling and programs for seniors.

Winter fun @ the PBGC
The PBGC, 663 Kearny Ave., is currently open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The club features a gym, club room with air hockey, ping pong, bumper pool, foosball, video games and computers. Tournaments run every night. Trips are scheduled for Disney on Ice, a Seton Hall basketball game and a New Jersey Devils game. Club supervisors are Tom Fraser, Paul and Vanessa Vieira, Ryan and Michele Fraser, Tania Latka and Desiree Colon.
Disposing mattress or box spring
The Kearny Department of Public Works has mattress bags available for sale at the DPW office, 357 Bergen Ave., for proper disposal of mattresses or box springs. Bags are priced at $9 for king-size, $7 for full/queen-size and $5 for twin-size. Wrapping of mattresses and/or box springs in plastic before placement at the curb for bulk trash collection disposal is required to deal with general sanitation and bed bug issues. Literacy NJ seeks volunteers
Literacy NJ West Hudson is recruiting volunteer tutors to help adult learners improve literacy skills. Tutors receive 15 hours of training in four sessions, where they learn how to run a book group, help students prepare for the U.S. citizenship test, prepare adult learners for the high school equivalency exam or lead a small ESL conversation group. The curriculum is provided, and tutors sign up for a semester at a time. The training is offered 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 8, 15, 22, and 29 at the Kearny Branch Library, 759 Kearny Ave. The remaining hours are for a classroom observation. Literacy NJ offers citizen-test prep
Literacy NJ West Hudson offers citizenship prep classes. Open registration takes place Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. at the Kearny Library, 318 Kearny Ave. Classes take place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon from Jan. 30 to May 22.

Audition for W.H.A.T.’s ‘Unlucky Clovers’
The West Hudson Arts and Theater Company announces auditions for the brand new play, “Unlucky Clovers,” Dec. 18 and 20, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the W.H.A.T. Theatre, 65 Oakwood Ave., Kearny. In “Unlucky Clovers,” the entire Clover family and invited guests have gathered to celebrate Old Man Clover’s birthday. However, when the grouchy man accuses his family of stealing his lucky charm and threatens to reveal family secrets as retaliation, the party takes a murderous turn. This is a murder-mystery dinner show that will run March 1 and 2. Actors will read from sides provided and take part in some simple improv exercises.
WCA EMD meets Dec. 12
The Woman’s Club of Arlington’s Evening Membership Department meets Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Henrietta Benstead Center, 60 Columbia Ave. The children from the Salvation Army Friday Forté group will entertain with holiday music. The sweeper’s still out there
Residents are alerted to move their cars at the appropriate times this winter since the street sweeper will continue to operate daily, weather permitting. Motorists are reminded to adhere to all no parking rules applicable to sweeper days.
Santa’s mailbox has returned
The Department of Parks & Recreation, announces that Santa’s mailbox has been set up on the Lyndhurst Town Hall lawn. It is a special mailbox that goes directly to Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole. Please do remember that Santa needs the children’s last name and addresses to answer all the letters, so make sure it is included before putting it in the mailbox. He was very sad he couldn’t answer some letters last year. Also note that since Santa will be getting much busier closer to Christmas, the mailbox will get transported back to the North Pole on the morning of Monday, Dec. 17.
North Arlington
NAPD hosting annual toy drive
The North Arlington Police Department’s Crime Prevention and Community-Relations Unit sponsors its annual toy drive. New, unwrapped todays may be dropped off at NAPD Headquarters — behind Borough Hall on Ridge Road — through Dec. 19. Toys will be distributed to area hospitals, local families and others in need.

Santa rides around town Dec. 15
Santa’s annual ride around Nutley is Saturday, Dec. 15. Look for him with the Nutley Fire Department between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. In case of inclement weather, he’ll be at the High Street Fire House from 9:30 to 10:20 a.m.; at the Chestnut Street Fire House between 10:30 and 11:20 a.m. and at the Park Avenue Fire House between 12:10 p.m. and 1 p.m.
